Ideally the Portuguese bullfighting horses are purebred Lusitano or Andalusian stallions.

Today, you will find that along with Pure Lusitanos and Andalusians, cross-bred horses, such as Lusitano/Quarter Horse, Lusitanos/Arabian, even purebred Quarter Horses, Arabians, Aztecas.

Bullfighting horses must be persevering, obedient, and bold. The ability to be athletic, fast, energetic, alert, yet sensitive to the bit for easy control and show personality. Without these qualities it makes it challenging to find good bullfighting horses.
